3-point shooting lifts Mary Baldwin over Hood

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – No. 3 seed Mary Baldwin College shot 42.9-percent from 3-point range and knocked off No. 1 seed Hood College, 77-76, in the Atlantic Women’s Colleges Conference Championship game at Wilson College.

The win gave the Squirrels’ their first NCAA Division III Tournament bid in school history.

Mary Baldwin (19-8) also became the fourth non-No. 1 seed in five years to win the AWCC Tournament and snapped Hood’s two-year reign as conference champion.

The Squirrels took advantage of Hood’s 1-3-1 zone, making 12-of-28 attempts from behind the 3-point line, eight in the second half.  Senior Lynn Malone was 4-of-5 from 3-point range in the second half and was 6-of-10 in the game for a team-high 32 points.

Mary Baldwin led 34-32 at halftime and stretched its lead to eight as sophomore Melissa Conyers hit a 3-pointer with 11:16 to play, giving the Squirrels a 60-52 advantage.  Hood went on an 8-0 run, however, pulling to within one, 60-59, with 10:03 to play on a 3-pointer by senior Mandy Fischer.

The Blazers (19-8) tied the game at 64-64 with 7:14 to play on two free throws by Fischer, but Hood could never gain the lead.  Mary Baldwin built a 4-point lead with 2:43 to play on senior Maneisha Hardy’s fourth three of the game.

Hood, however, would tie the score twice more, 73-73 with 1:35 to play, and 76-76 with 36 seconds left.

With the score tied at 76-76, Malone drove through the lane, but was fouled by Hood junior Danielle Allen.  Malone hit the second of two free throws to give the Squirrels a 77-76 lead with 19 seconds to play.

After a Hood timeout, Hood had three chances for the win.  Sophomore Rita Willis missed a driving jumper.  Senior Katie Brennan grabbed the offensive rebound and missed the put-back, and Fischer grabbed a second rebound and missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Willis scored 26 of Hood’s 44 second-half points, en route to a game-high and Hood single-game record 35.  She also had 10 rebounds for the Blazers.  Allen scored 16 and had 11 rebounds, while Fischer had 15 points and hit 4-of-17 threes.

Malone scored 24 of her team-best 32 in the second half for Mary Baldwin.  Hardy added 14 and had 10 rebounds, and sophomore Katrina Scruggs had 13.
